Chapter 7
E-businesses.
If you have your paycheck deposited directly to your bank account, did you ever wonder how it gets there?
Well, the money that your employer owes you for services rendered, is sent to your bank account electronically. An EFT or Electronic Funds Transfer. Because of the EFT, people can pay bills online, purchase items at e-businesses, and use any ATM.
E-businesses have some distinct advantages over the old fashioned "brick and mortar" businesses. Location is very important to the brick and mortar business. They need to have high visibility to attract customers, and need to have hours of operation that are good for the customers. Brick and mortar businesses are also limited to the space available to them. They can only stock so many shelves, in each store. This also may lead to having an excess of unwanted inventory on hand.
E-business models.
A business model is how any business establishes itself. It is the audience a business plays to.
There are five e-business models to use. B2C, C2C, C2B, B2B, B2G. These are as follows:
1. Business to Consumer.
2. Consumer to Consumer.
3. Consumer to Business
4. Business to Business
5. Business to Government.
A business to consumer is a standard model, where businesses try to expand beyond their brick and mortar location to reach a far greater amount of consumers. JCPenney,Wal-mart, Barnes & Noble, etc are types of business to consumer models.
Priceline.com was a pioneer in the consumer to business model. They have a reverse auction from that of ebay. Consumers can bid on airlines and hotels. This can very beneficial to the consumers, as these deals are usually at a great discount.
A consumer to consumer business model is where consumers put items up for auction, and consumers will place bids for these items. Ebay is a great example of this type of business model.

Auto parts stores and car dealers have a business to business type of business model. When a dealer is repairing a vehicle and needs parts they can go online to find the part they need and have it delivered right Businesses have access to a portal on a vendor's website to allow them to order supplies and other inventory.
The business to government model brings together both the government and the buyers who want to place bids on government contracts.

Chapter 5
Did you ever wonder, "are there any other tools I can use to research or find specific information on the internet"?
Well, yes there is actually. Let me explain a few of them to you.
First of all, there is a "portal". A portal is kind of like a gateway to a web sites individual topic of information. For example, a training and education vendor may have a portal for the students to go to for test taking, videos, and audio training. Portals can be for many uses, and for a variety of viewers. There are consumer portals, for weather, sports, shopping, etc. Some portals can even be personalized, like a homepage. My Verizon, My Yahoo!, and My MSN are only just a few examples of the personal portals. Corporate portals allows employees, vendors and customers to have access to certain information at a corporate website. Employees can search for job opportunities, so they can advance their careers. Customers can check into products or services. Vendors can do business tranactions with another business via a portal to the website.
Before the internet came along. People would have to rely on the radio, newspapers, magazines, and television for the latest updated news. Which was usually hours or even days old. Today we can use the internet to get updated information, usually up to the minute. This is a great supplement to the old way of being informed. Today we also have streaming media. This is a film or audio clip of a very recent event that was just captured and placed onto the internet for everyone to see.
Another great online resource is the online encyclopedias available. These are usually free to the public, however, you may need to set up an account to view an article in it's entirety. As well as with the encyclopedia, online dictionaries are available to the public. Another rather interesting resource is the online reference desk. LibrarySpot and iTools, and the Internet Public Library are sources of information for just about any question you might have to ask.
Looking for a site for health /fitness and dieting? There are plenty of those on the internet. WebMD and Discovery health are just two of the many sites. Also, if you want to you can pay your bills online, do your banking transactions, and even invest your money online. You can check your credit score at a number of different websites.

Chapter 6
So what is a LAN?
Hmmm... used to know it. Oh, that's right it's a Local Area Network.
A LAN is a small network of computers connected together. LANs are very useful in home, offices, and campuses. On a small home or office set up, the computers can all share a single printer/fax machine. On a little larger scale, the computers can be connected to a server. This server is the brains of the operation. It can be configured to have the operating system software and other applications on it to be used by the other computers, called clients. This is know as a client/server set up.
Moving up to a much larger scale network is a WAN, or wide area network. The most common WAN is the internet. WANs can be several LANs connected together, or a WAN can spread across the country or the world.
The infrastructure of the internet is rather complex. For example, just to download a simple page from a web page the file needs to download and load into your browser, and then download to your computer. All of the happens in a matter of seconds. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has to have the hardware and software in place to make this all happen.
The Transmission Control Protocol and the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is the standard for internet communication. This makes it possible for one computer to "talk" to another computer. This possbility is expanded to include virtual meetings and conference calls.
The internet and the web are great things. However, like all great things in life, there is always a negative. Viruses, worms, and Trojan horses can be devastating to people and businesses. A virus is a small computer program hidden inside an email used to infect other program files on a computer. A worm is a virus that can replicate or recreate itself and travel from computer to computer. A Trojan horse is program that appears very innocent until later you find out that it has done damage to your computer, by stealing information and passwords. However, there is help online at websites such as Norton - see screen print below.

Personal Learning Network
The future of education is now.
The new way to get an education is not by reading a revised book. But, by researching topics on the internet and connecting to other students on a personal learning network. This is were students teach each other and exchange information and ideas. By using blog posts and bookmarked web pages, students can work with each other to solve problems and find expand their horizons for learning.
By using a website like Symbaloo.com, students can bookmark important and useful websites. Then, they can exchange this information with other students through blogs. In essence, the student is creating his or her own text book for the class the he or she is taking. Using articles and journals from web pages and blogs from other students and people in the field of study. A great deal of information can be accumulated and used to create a meaningful text or journal. Also, with an MP3 player you can download eBook and podcasts of classes from any college or university in the world.
So now is the time to become a Personal Learning Network student.

Wow! Want a new way to spruce up that dull and boring website or blog? Try adding some audio sound bytes. Even audio and video clips. That would certainly add life to any project. With the help of a website called Sound Cloud and a little bit a creativity, and you can create a sound byte to really put some audible sound into your blogs or website.
I really do find a great benefit to any aspiring musicians. This is an awesome place to post your music for beginner singer/songwriter and bands just starting out. Just to know that by placing a demo track on this site, could actually reach millions worldwide. The potential for being heard by an agent or record company, has a very great chance. I am quite certain that they are always looking for new talent on this type of website. It is like having an audition to the whole world.
I also think this a very good medium for any businesses to create their own advertising. You can create an ad for free and then post it to your website to be heard by anyone who comes to your site. This seems like a "no-brainer" to me. For the investment of a little time and effort, anyone can create a customized advertisement for their business and be very proud of it.
My Sound Cloud picture is from wordle.com
Here is a very simple sound clip from Sound Cloud, just as a demo.
Audio Recording on Saturday evening
Here is a Sound Cloud recordiing. A rather beautiful instrumental from Pachelbel called Canon.
Have a listen.

Symbaloo
This video is courtesy of Symbaloo.com. Please check them out and create your own Symbaloo.
So many websites... so little time.
If you could put all of your favorite websites into just one place, would you do it?
Well, now you can . Symbaloo.com makes that possible. It is one stop shopping for all of your favorite websites all located conveniently in one place. You can post it to your blog, or website. You can add it to your favorites list, for easy reference. It can contain just about many applications as you may need to use on a daily basis. You can also link it to your Twitter or Facebook account for greater connectivity with friends and family. I greatly appreciate the tab for my education websites. This will benefit me a great deal for doing all the research necessary for college classes. Now I can go to the iTunes store and use my iTunes card to download all of the music I want - legally, of coarse. Reading the Wall Street Journal or New York Times is now only a few mere clicks away. My favorite football team ( Miami Dolphins) and hockey team (Buffalo Sabres) are easy to find and connected my Twitter page as well.
